Boromir was a valiant warrior of Gondor, renowned for his prowess in combat and skill on the battlefield. He was the eldest son of Denethor, the twenty-sixth and last Ruling Steward of Gondor. Even the people of Rohan admired Boromir, particularly Éomer. He was the older brother of Faramir. Boromir attended the Council of Elrond where he decided to join the Fellowship of the Ring. Denethor was well aware that Sauron's assault on Gondor would come during his lifetime and prepared accordingly, even though he increasingly came to believe that the struggle would be hopeless.
