Faramir was the second son of Denethor II and younger brother of Boromir. He was Captain of the Rangers of Ithilien, a military group whose purpose was to defend Ithilien, east of the Anduin river, to prevent Haradrimand Orcs from entering Gondor and from gaining full control of the lost province. While in Ithilien, Faramir captured Frodo, Sam, and Gollum, but eventually set them free on their path after he released the importance of their mission. After the War of the Ring, Faramir became the first Prince of Ithilien and married Éowyn of Rohan.
