After being freed from Wormtongue's influence, the renewed king lead the defense of his people at Helm's Deep. Théoden then led six thousand Rohirrim to the aid of Gondor at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, bravely charging the legions of Sauron. The niece of King Théoden and sister to Éomer, Éowyn, was a noblewoman of Rohan who called herself a shield-maiden. With the hobbit Merry Brandybuck, she rode into battle and killed the Witch-King of Angmar and later married Faramir.
